Node-Locked Licenses – Roaming and VPN
A CopyMinder node-locked license is activated on a specific computer and is not dependent on a network license server. The licensed computer can be used anywhere – in the office, at home, or on a travel laptop – with no special configuration required.
The only network requirement is that the computer periodically connect to the CopyMinder license server to validate the subscription. This connection is initiated outbound by CopyMinder and typically occurs automatically in the background. If the computer is offline for an extended period, the license will eventually require validation before the software can launch.
For computers that are permanently air-gapped or cannot reach the CopyMinder URLs, a manual activation process is available. Contact HydroComp support to discuss manual activation options.
Floating Licenses – VPN Access
For -Floating licenses, a VPN-connected computer can access the CopyMinder Server on the corporate network provided that:
- The VPN tunnel places the client computer on the same logical network segment as the CopyMinder Server (or routing between the VPN subnet and the server subnet is permitted).
- The CopyMinder multicast auto-detect can reach the server, or the server address is entered manually in the client configuration.
In practice, many VPN configurations suppress multicast traffic, so manual server address entry is usually required for VPN-connected users. The server address or hostname is entered in the CopyMinder Client configuration on the VPN user's computer.
-Floating Licenses – Air-Gapped or Highly Restricted Networks
Some organizations operate within networks that cannot initiate outbound connections to external license servers (air-gapped environments, defense contractor networks). CopyMinder supports a manual offline activation mode for these cases:
- The license server computer activates using an internet-connected offline device (phone, tablet, or computer on a separate network) by visiting a CopyMinder activation URL.
- This activation authorization is locked to the specific server computer for the duration of the license period.
- Manual activation is available for 12-month Lease licenses. Perpetual node-locked licenses require periodic online validation and are not compatible with permanently air-gapped environments without additional configuration. Contact HydroComp to discuss options.
Key Reminder
The CopyMinder license server initiates all connections outbound to the HydroComp license cloud – does not initiate inbound connections to the user's network. In most enterprise VPN and firewall configurations, allowing outbound access from the license server to the CopyMinder URLs on port 80 is sufficient.
